During her second year at PCC (2007-2008 school year), she was overwhelmingly elected by her fellow students to sit as Student Trustee on the College's six-member Board of Trustees. She was very active in school, helping to tutor students with the Project Beacon office, and was an active member of the Environmental Club. Muller was selected among numerous students from the Pacific to participate in the highly competitive summer internship program in Washington, D.C. The internship which she finished with flying colors was a final requirement for her Associate of Science (AS) degree in Environmental/Marine Science. Muller is also an Upward Bound (UB) alumni and while a UB student she worked at the Development office as a work-study student writer for this newsletter. The College family bids Muller farewell and wishes her the best at UH- Manoa. |

New Insect
Acting on a report from local community members regarding a never before seen insect infesting dying Cycad plants near a local gas station in Koror, PCC- Cooperative Research & Extension (CRE) researchers and invasive insect specialists Dr. N.M. Esguerra and Dr. A.G. Del Rosario went to investigate. What they observed was the four Cycad plants in the area were heavily infest with scale insects which appeared to be feeding on the sap of the plants. Esguerra and Del Rosario later confirmed that the invasive insect was the Asian Cycad scale, Aulacaspis yasumatsui Takagi, notorious for infesting ornamental Cycads on Guam. Esguerra nd Del Rosario are currently working with Dr. Aubrey Moore of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at the University of Guam to bring a biological agent, the coccinellid beetle, Rhyzobius lophanthae to Palau to help control this scale insect. For more information about the control of invasive insects in Palau, please contact Drs. Esguerra and Del Rosario at PCC-CRE at telephone number 488-2746.
