College Bids Farewell to Honorable Ambassador Lee

Ambassador of the Republic of China (Taiwan) to Palau, Matthew S.M. Lee (r) with President Dr. Patrick U. Tellei during the Ambassador's first courtesy visit to the College early last year.

The Government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) over the years has been very supportive of Palau Community College (PCC). It has sponsored numerous trainings to College employees and staff to Taiwan as well as provided volunteers to teach the Mandarin Language program at PCC.

Through the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan), the College has also received many donations of fresh fruits and produce from the Taiwan Technical

With the many local and off-island supporters of the College, PCC President Dr. Patrick U. Tellei is even more thankful that Chairman of the NPO South Sea Community Association, Mr. Yuji Namekawa, and the Association, has set up a scholarship fund for PCC. Over the years, Namekawa and the association has donated fireworks during Palau's Independence Day celebrations. He has also been actively involved in various volunteer projects in Palau for the past thirty (30) years. This time, Namekawa has decided to focus his donation on health and education with the establishment of the PCC scholarship, Ministry of Health (MOH) incinerator, and garbage trucks.

Namekawa visited the College on Wednesday with colleague Kawauchi Shiro, Chief Executive Officer of Miki Group, Miki-Sigen Co., Ltd., and was accompanied by Mrs. Jennifer Yano, secretary of the association. Namekawa met with Vice President Olegeriil and Development Office Director Armstrong Debelbot and members of the College's executive committee to present 100,000 yen as the initial funds for the establishment of the Palau Japan Cultural Exchange Association Namekawa Scholarship Fund for PCC students. The scholarship fund includes $12,000 dollars

for the first year and will increase to $24,000 during the second year, and thereafter.

Namekawa and NPO South Sea Community Association will also fund two PCC students to study on a Japanese Scholarship to Japan.

In addition to the scholarship fund to PCC, Namekawa and the NPO South Sea Community Association have also donated an incinerator for the hospital which costs about $1.5 million and have also donated garbage trucks. Two of the garbage trucks were donated to MOH while the other two were donated personally to Mrs. Yano. Mrs. Yano, however, decided to donate one to the Ministry of Justice to fulfill a request by the late and former Bureau of Public Safety Director Hazime Telei and donate the other truck to PCC.

The College Board of Trustees, President Dr. Patrick U. Tellei, Administration, Faculty, Staff, and most especially the students thank Namekawa and the NPO South Sea Community Association for investing in the education of the Palauan youth and supporting prosperous health and a clean environment in Palau. Very special thanks to the Minister of Health Dr. Victor Yano and wife Jennifer Yano for personally going to Japan to work with colleagues in soliciting donations and support to Palau.

Instructor Presents at MOE Teachers' Convention

Instructor Jemmy Blelai after presenting at the Ministry of Education Teachers' Convention yesterday.

While some instructors are done with summer classes and others on vacation, instructor Jemmy Blelai spent practically his whole summer teaching. As soon as spring semester ended, Blelai began preparing for 2008 Summer Teachers' Academy. For five weeks, he was providing refresher training to the participants of the Teachers' Academy held on campus, which concluded last week. Immediately after that, he was asked by Dean of Academic Affairs Alvina Timarong to fulfill the request by the Ministry of Education (MOE) to have PCC instructors present at their teachers' convention this week at Palau High School.

Instructor Blelai accepted the request wholeheartedly saying, "It is all our responsibility to work together for the good of the College". He presented on Tuesday the same topics he taught at the Teachers' Academy but focused more on quality teaching for classroom success in order to relate to the convention's theme, "Student Success". Because his presentation was much favored, he was asked again to present yesterday.

Dean Timarong would like to thank instructor Blelai for fulfilling the request by MOE and representing the College at the MOE Teachers' Convention.

Mesekiu Basketball Team Makes it to Play-offs, Wins 5th Place

Despite the loss of six players who left for summer vacation, the Mesekiu Basketball team, with only a few players, advanced to the play-offs. During their first game in the play-offs, Mesekiu played a tight game against team Jaguars and won by a mere 4 points (75-71). Edison Anjerok led the team with the most scoring points of 22 followed by teammate Chris Chiba who scored 15 points. Mesekiu went on a winning streak and defeated team Ididers to make it into the top ten and then defeated team Ranchers to make it to the top five. Anjerok led the team for both games with the help of Chiba and Chris Carlos.

Then, during the last game of the play-offs, Mesekiu lost to Surangel by only two points. Regardless, the Mesekiu Basketball team have been training and working hard, earning 5th place in the 2007-2008 Shell National Basketball League, an outstanding progress from last year.

"Next season, Mesekiu team will be

Coach Hamilton Maech (standing center) with five of the eight players of the Mesekiu basketball team.
