Grace Merong and Pioria Asito, PCC Library Technicians, were among 17 library staff from throughout Micronesia and American Samoa selected to attend the Pacific Library Training Institute (PLTI) recently held at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa (UH-Manoa) from July 21 to August 8, 2008. The PLTI is a three-year project funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) Laura Bush 21st Century Librarians Program, which is administered by the Pacific Resources for Education and Learning (PREL). This year the opportunity was specifically designed for staff working in special libraries, archives and museums, as well as those working with special collections. Dr. Karen Peacock, the lead instructor, covered many important topics that were beneficial to our library, including rare books, preservation, cataloging, and strategic planning. Dr. Peacock's father, Daniel Peacock, the author of Lee Boo of Belau, shared his thoughts on "Books You Should Know About," which was a special session for all of the participants.

President Dr. Patrick U. Tellei

On behalf of the PCC Board of Trustees, Administration, Faculty, and Staff, I would like to express a warm welcome to all the new, returning, and transfer students to PCC. For the next few months, we look forward to providing you with the quality instruction and learning resources you need to succeed with your educational goals.

You are the building blocks of the future of our nation and our region, and when you fulfill your education goals, you build a better and brighter future for all of us.

Again, I welcome all of you to the PCC family and wish everyone a successful and productive Fall Semester.

Sincerely,
Patrick U. Tellei, EdD

500 Plus Students Register for Fall Semester

According to Registrar Lesley Adachi, over five hundred students have registered since the opening day of registration.

However, we anticipate a total of six hundred students to enroll this Fall Semester as the late registration and the drop and add period draws to an end today.

See Mesekiu's News next week for a more detailed report of the Fall 2008 enrollment status.

College Welcomes All Students!
(Please feel free to clip this page and post it on your wall or desk for easy reference)

The Palau Community College administration, faculty, and staff welcome all continuing students back from the fall recess and extends a warm welcome to all the returning, readmitted, and new students who enrolled this 2008 fall semester. Best wishes for a successful semester!

Stay tuned to These Networks. School can be a frightening place for new students. People of diverse cultures, older students, commuters, and people with special needs can feel excluded. Some people attend classes for years and still feel they are standing alone on the outside, looking in.
You don't have to be a stranger to school life. Networking is one way to break through the barriers that keep students isolated.

Students who overcome feelings of isolation increase their chances of staying in school and succeeding. Networks can also prepare students for the world of work, where most projects involve teamwork. You can begin networking immediately. Here are some techniques you can use:

Introduce yourself to classmates. Get to class early and break the ice by discussing the holidays.

Plan to meet people. Write an Intention Statement promising to meet three new people each week. Plan who these people will be and how and when you intend to meet them.

See your instructor. If you feel lost in a class, make an appointment to see your instructor outside class. You might discover a human being who wants you to succeed.

Join a Club. A Builders club, Tourism & Hospitality club, Environmental Club, and Student Body Association can put you in touch with potential friends.

Form a study group. Peer pressure can be positive. Study with students who excel and also look for partners from different racial, ethnic, or religious backgrounds. Diversity will add depth to your group and stimulate everyone's thinking.

Play ball. You don't have to be a world-class athlete to play sports. As a matter of fact, keeping fit is one of the marks of a master student. Most schools have intramural leagues, and PCC definitely has intramural sports for you to take advantage of!

Use school media. School newspapers can alert you to interesting activities and people. Bulletin boards can be sources of information about clubs and social activities. Also, check the school catalog.

Study at the library. It's quiet, it's comfortable, and it's a place to meet other serious students.

Use Student Services. These include career planning, testing services, counseling services, student health services, financial aid, student body association, student organizations and student activities. These services are free to students. Going to school puts you in contact with an extraordinary network of services. All that remains is for you to use them.

Succeeding in College- Part 1
Taken from Study Tips.com at www.how-to-study.com

Just as in elementary school through high school, your success in college requires high motivation and effort, strong study skills, effective time management, and good test-taking strategies. But college success requires much more. Once you move from high school to college, you will generally find that students are more motivated and competent than in high school; teachers are more demanding; the work is more difficult; and students are expected to be independent. Further, if you are living away from home for the first time, you will have many new experiences. Here are some ideas that will help you succeed in college:
Have Clear Goals
College success requires commitment and a lot of hard work. You must be very certain about the importance of a college education.
• Be clear about why you are going to college.

• Establish specific goals you wish to accomplish.
• Know what it will take to reach these goals.
• Be certain your goals are consistent with your interests and abilities.
• Be flexible change your goals if needed based on your experience as you progress through college.
Get Financial Aid if Needed
College is expensive. Even if you attend a public college or university and live at home, you still must pay for tuition, fees, and books. There are many sources of financial aid that can help you meet the high costs of college. Become aware of and pursue these sources.
• Consider all possible sources of financial aid in addition to your college's financial aid office.
• Meet all deadlines for submitting applications and documentation.
