Students Present at 6th EMS Student Symposium |
This Summer Semester, two Environmental/Marine Science (EMS) students, Leena Muller and Sheena Henry, were enrolled in the Field Studies course (SC 270). As part of their studies, they both had to present their projects during the 6th EMS Student Symposium, which was actually held on Wednesday at Baderirt building. Muller, who spent her summer in an internship program working for and with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Coral Reef Conservation Program and the US Coral Reef Task Force in Washington D.C., presented her internship experience. While in the states, Muller, with the help of her mentor, Beth Dieveny, was researching and writing her paper on a marine conservation in Palau called the Airai Bay. She conducted interviews from the research staff at NOAA, did background scientific literature searches, and prepared a set of questions for local Palau resource managers. She also helped |
compile a profile of Palau for a U.S. Coral Reef Task Force Member Coral Profile. This entailed researching the local resource agencies engaged in coral reef research and management projects in Palau, and highlighting the key issues and projects that these agencies are conducting. Henry, on the other hand, focused her study on identifying sites and features in Peleliu State relating to WWII, under the direction of Rita Olsudong, an Archaeologist at the Bureau of Arts and Culture. Olsudong, who was also present at the symposium, commended Henry for a job well done as she completed phase one of the project with very minimal supervision. Evaluators for the Research Symposia included PCC Science Instructors and field study mentors. Copies of the Research Projects will be collected and filed at PCC Library. |
