GLEAN-PCC Hosts Global |
PCC Students Attend 2008 Presidential Debate
PCC students and some faculty attended the 2008 Presidential Debate sponsored by the Youth in Action (YIA) and Koror State Youth Council (KSYC) which was held at Ngarachamayong Cultural Center on Wednesday. With all the 2008 Presidential Candidates in one room, the students as well as the audience, comprised mostly of the youth of Palau, had the opportunity to question and hear the candidates views about pressing youth issues. Such issues included education in Palau, alcohol and substance abuse, environment, economic development, suicide and drop-out rates, job opportunities, and scholarships, among others. The debate not only showed the candidates' stance on youth issues, it also revealed the candidates' priorities and the changes they want to make once in office. It was informative and educational for the youth of Palau. This is the second Presidential Debate ever in the history of Palau. During the first debate held at the PCC cafeteria a few years back, College President Dr. Patrick U. Tellei served as the moderator. |

Palumbi is accompanied by his assistant, Dan Griffin also from Stanford University. Palumbi, a colleague of local congressman and renowned environmentalist Noah Idechong, has published numerous science books, articles, and commentaries. The workshop which focuses on the topic, "Is the Palau coral symbiont resistant to heat?", included lectures, lab demos, and field activities to distinguish whether the corals found in Palau have a type C or D of zooxanthellae, a type of algae. Type C is heat sensitive therefore causing corals to bleach easily. Type D is heat |
resistant causing the opposite reaction to corals. Palumbi and the students collected corals in Peleliu and two other sites in Koror to use in their research. Before concluding the workshop today, Palumbi will be conducting a public lecture on Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) & Connectivity at the Palau International Coral Reef Center (PICRC) from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Any interested individuals are most welcome to attend the lecture. The workshop was funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF)- Advance Technological Education (ATE). It fulfills the NSF objectives of faculty collaboration, work with an interested university-based faculty with relevant expertise to work with the participating community college faculty to develop their technical knowledge, laboratory facilities, data acquisition and analysis capabilities, and field experiences. |

CE Holds Graduation for Summer Kids Participants |
||
|
The Continuing Education (CE) Summer Kids Program concluded last Friday, July 18th with a graduation ceremony at the CE training room on campus. The ceremony began with Dean Willy Wally giving opening remarks, then awarding the ninety-one (91) students with their certificates of completion. Shortly after, the ceremony closed with a dance performance by some of the students. The program, covering numerous subjects, lasted from June 23 to July 18. |
Many teachers were instrumental in the success of the program and none of this would have been possible without their hard work and dedication. Miriam Anastacio, Julia Wally, Mayleen Ngiriou, and Yvonne Ruluked taught English Reading, English Writing, Palauan Orthography, and Math. Karen Mobel of the PCC Human Resources Division taught keyboarding. Students enrolled in the Marine Science class, taught by Carol Emaurois, received their certificates last week. |

Every few years, the Water Enforcement Officers of the Division of Utility Collection attend a Water Meter Calibration, Repair, and Replacement Training. With the arrival of the new meter testing equipment, Field Supervisor Brainard Kloulechad, Louis Kaluu, Cleofas Iyar, Jr., Happy Oilouch, Henaro Andres, Charlone Arbedul, and Matthew Blailes attended the week-long training with instructor Eugene Uehara. The training which was held at the Auto Shop on campus, enabled the Water Enforcement Officers to learn how to operate the new equipment which tests both analog and digital meters. To ensure that they know how to operate the new equipment, the officers had to retrieve actual meters from homes in Koror, check, repair, and replace defective parts, if necessary, and then |
test the meters with the new tester until efficient, and then return them to their respective home owners. The training which concluded last Friday, July 18th was sponsored by the Operations & Maintenance Improvement Project (OMIP). |
