PCC Adapts Cost-Saving Measures

Self-Study Committee Organizes, Sets Timeline

PCC Self-Study Steering Committee during their meeting last week.

The steering committee appointed by President Tellei to lead the writing of the College's Self-Study report met on Tuesday to approve sub-committee memberships and agree on an overall timeline for the drafting of the report. According to the working timeline approved by the committee, the final draft of the report should be ready for the President and the Board's consideration by next fall.     (Continued on back page)

MHS Class of 2008 Thanks President Tellei

On behalf of the 2008 Graduating Class of Mindszenty High School (MHS), Eve Morei (l) and Uchel Athanacio (c) thanked PCC President Dr. Patrick U. Tellei last week with a monetary gift. President Tellei helped the MHS seniors build their class gift for the school, a miniature abai called "
Bai ra Uldasu". The abai which was completed soon after the 2008 MHS graduation ceremony back in May, stands to represent the seniors wish for the underclassmen to always challenge themselves and strive to dream big.

PCC President Dr. Patrick U. Tellei

With the dramatic increase of fuel and the 2.5% deduction from the budget appropriated from the national government for fiscal year 2008, PCC President Dr. Patrick U. Tellei directed the College to take necessary measures to help save energy and money.

Citing Executive Order No. 234 by Palau President Tommy E. Remengesau, Jr. that limits the use of government vehicles, President Tellei

issued a memorandum declaring a moratorium on all PCC vehicles saying that all vehicles be accounted for and parked in a designated area on campus after working hours. College vehicles will only be used during evenings or weekends with the approval and authorization of President Tellei. Another measure by Tellei to reduce cost was the switching of cell phones used by key College personnel from the "775" unlimited minutes account to the "778" prepaid account, which has a $50 cap. Earlier last month, Tellei also issued a directive to maintenance staff to take most of the campus buildings and classrooms off of the power grid on Friday evening and bring them back on Monday morning, leaving only the designated areas such as the dorm, computer room, library, and the security lights online.

Happy 27th Constitutional Day

Office Crowded with Aspiring Writers
By: Uriik T. Luii, Upward Bound Work-Study Student

The College is not only crowded with students participating in the various summer programs on campus and some taking summer college courses, but also with the work-study students who are gaining work experience through the College's Federal Work-study program, Upward Bound (UB) program, and the Workforce Investment Act (WIA). This summer, the PCC Development office, despite its cramped space, took in five talented work-study students namely Norton King (WIA), Uriik Tamara Luii (UB), Dilmowais Dawn Rechirei (UB), Fritz Koshiba Jr. (UB), and Elway Ikeda (PCC Federal Work-Study Program).

For the past few weeks, the group of five have been learning the basic procedures of drafting the College's newsletter, Mesekiu's News. This includes taking photos, writing articles, reporting, and research interviews for the weekly newsletter. They are also learning basic clerical work, gathering and compiling research survey data, and creating College promotional materials with the use of graphic/layout design software programs.

Mandarin Instructor
Donates to Endowment
Fund

Supporting the College's efforts in securing the financial viability of the only post-secondary institution in the Republic of Palau, departing Mandarin instructor Wenling Su generously donated $50 dollars to the College's Endowment Fund before leaving the island on Wednesday. Su completed a successful year teaching the Mandarin language to employees of the government as well as the private agencies in Palau. She returned to her home country of the Republic of China- Taiwan to visit her family before moving to Bellingham, Washington State where she has been offered a teaching position at the Western Washington University. The College thanks Su for her kind donation and wishes her the best of luck!

PCC Students Participate in Oceania Area Championships

For four days, eight Palauan athletes and their Australian Trainer/Coach, Terry West and Palauan Coach Russell Roman, put their hearts out to compete with other Pacific Islanders during the Oceania Area Championships held in Saipan from June 25th- June 28th. Two of the eight athletes, John Stills and Leon Mengloi, are PCC students. Stills, an Environmental/Marine Science student, participated in three events, the 400 meter run; 200 meter run; and 4x100 meter run relay. Mengloi, who majors in Tourism & Hospitality, participated in the Octathlon which consists of the 100 meter run; long jump; high jump; javelin; shot-put; 1,000 meter run; and the 400 meter run, as well as the 4x100 meter run relay.

According to Stills, all the athletes bested their time in their respective events. "Some of us trained a couple of months earlier while others only had a month. Nevertheless, we did our best. It was a great experience as we all bested our personal records and also had the opportunity to test our skills with other fellow Pacific Islanders. We also met and made new friends from other participating islands such as Guam, Federated States of Micronesia, Australia, Papua New Guinea, Fiji, and Cook Islands."
